Almost regularly I get asked what my favorite part of wedding photography is. And I’ve got to be honest its a tough one! It’s not as cut and dry as you’d think to just pick one. (Or maybe it is, I don’t know. If you know me you know that I can argue every side of a case and chances are I not only can but WILL—my husband has installed the coin flip app on my phone for this reason-true story). BUT I DIGRESS…
How about we water it down and say my favorite part of the wedding day? Okay, that ones not so easy either.. I love the anticipation and emotion of the getting ready shots, I love the first steps as man and wife when the energy and love in the room is palpable and I love exit shots with my whole heart (you literally watch the couple take hands and run into their future and chances are they’re running through a tunnel of romantic sparklers. Totally dreamy, right? What you don’t know about these gorgeous sparkler shots is how technically difficult those shots are to shoot but what makes it really fun is doing it surrounded by intoxicated guests yielding literal STICKS OF FIRE. Seriously, who thought this one up?! Yet, amidst this chaos I still have to favorite that moment).
But my single favorite part of being a wedding photographer thats not so easy.
Don’t get me wrong-I love love. But most wedding photographers do. Heck, most PEOPLE do. I love the energy and raw emotion of a wedding day. I love the way that every single wedding is different. I love the fact that each couple experiences the spectrum of emotion differently. I love being a part of the happiest day of someones life (every weekend). Trust me, its a high. I love that I’m playing my part as a historian. That the photos I take will be family heirlooms. But most of all, I love that across all cultures and languages- love is the same. Its a universal language. I know guys, cheeseball alert. But some days I really do catch myself thinking how cool it is that I’m getting to do what I do.
Don’t get me wrong. The hustle and bustle of running a business can get me bogged down. I’m just like any other small business owner. I live a life where the idea of business hours is laughable. Most days I’m in my office into the wee hours and out the door to shoot at sunrise. And just like every business owner, I get tired. And you know what? I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Anyway, I know you guys are tired of listening to me ramble, if you are still even with me and haven’t skipped ahead to checking out some pretty rad pictures of the new Mr + Mrs Lord! Until next time my darlings..
